Yesterday Claire explained to the kids that they were going for a sleep-over at Toby’s tomorrow (i.e. tonight), and that we are also going to New York to see Jayne and Spencer at the end of the month. This was a nice thing to do, but somewhat problematical when the people you’re explaining it to don’t have a great grasp of the passage of time.

“Tonight?”

“No, tomorrow”

“We see Jayne and ‘Pencer?”

“No, tomorrow we see Toby, we’ll see Jayne in 2 weeks”

“After this day?” (generic term meaning ‘the future’)

“Yes”

“Tomorrow?”

“No…”

(repeat until bedtime).
