Lauren & Sam

It’s not all caviar and baby wipes, mate

Schooling

I paid a brief visit to Lauren’s school for an introductory ‘meet the tutor’ session a little while ago. Unsurprisingly she’s doing fine, fitting in really well and dealing with all the changes. The school are pretty hot on monitoring progress, so we should know more substantive things soon.

We both got to meet Sam’s teachers for his first year 5 meeting. He too is doing great, having already reached or exceeded the standard expected for when he leaves junior school in a couple of years. In particular he’s “an outstanding mental mathematician”. They both mentioned that he’s one of those irritating kids that doesn’t appear to be paying attention, but can recite back exactly what’s been said when asked. It’s possible this may be genetic. They did also mention that they’d been ‘spoiled’ by his sister, so they have to be careful not to compare them. We gently but firmly made the point that he’s very sensitive about that, and while he’s clearly not as academically inclined as his sister, he’s comparably smart (especially if you express things in terms of money), which I think they understood anyway.

An aside – Lauren split a bag of toffee with Sam by eye. We weighed the resulting bags, and she’d got the two bags even to within a single gram. She’s always had a gift for surveying quantities.
