We are gerbilated

After much pressure for some sort of pet, I’m now looking at 3 gerbils in our living room (in a tank, in case you’re wondering).  We didn’t give the kids a lot of negotiating room, as I’m fairly sure they’d rather have a cat (not happening), but they seem to be very impressed anyway.  We got them from the RSPCA (of course), and given the choice of 2 old ones, 2 white ones (very mouse looking) or these 3, we figured that we’d take the 3.  In part that’s because they need to be with other gerbils, so pairs are popular, but we figured people might be reluctant to take 3s so we could do our bit to help.

They’re fun so far – in theory they sleep every three hours or so, and after almost 3 hours they’re showing no signs of slowing down.  Lots of capering, moving the furniture (cardboard tubes), and trying to work out why they can’t dig through the glass of the tank.  This weekend may involve a trip to B&Q to build them an attic extension, as while the tank is twice the minimum size for a pair, we (and by we, I of course mean Claire) think they’d  be more comfortable with a penthouse to sleep in.

We’re working on names – they all look the same, and won’t stand still, so it’s going to be a collective name.  Lauren favours ‘The Bee Gees’, though I think I’ll refer to them as “Bobs” .
