God
Last night Sam and I were discussing the nativity story. He observed that after Jesus was born he became king (though it was unclear if he meant ‘of the Jews’ or ‘of creation’). That led to a pretty weighty discussion of why people invent gods. I pointed out that people don’t like not knowing the reasons behind things, so if they don’t understand them they invent an explanation, and that for people the most obvious explanation is something people-like. He seemed to accept that, though as a four year old he still sees many of the things we now understand with the same wonder I imagine early man would have felt.
Then we had ice cream.
